It’s been said before how serious of an impact stress can have on your life and on the human body but stress can be a direct cause of insomnia. In fact, stress is one of the most common reasons for insomnia in most adults. Stress affects all areas of your life but affecting your sleep can be one of the most devastating. This is because sleep is so important to us that missing it – even now and again- can have serious responses to the body.
Increased stress in your life could contribute to a sudden inability to sleep or can be the cause of certain sleep disorders, waking up from sleep in the middle of the night and other problems with insomnia. Long term stress can cause serious problems for a person. So what can be done about it?
The first step is to understand your stress and what is causing it. We cannot completely eliminate all the stress in our lives but there are many areas where if we take time to notice, we could decrease the amount of stress that we have in our lives. First, you need to take time to sit and analyze the areas of your life where you have the most stress.
Now look at where you think you can eliminate some of this stress. Are there any things that you could reduce or remove from your life? While we can’t all quit our jobs and live a life of luxury, there are some causes of stress that we do have the power to eliminate. For example, what difference would it make if you arrived at work a little earlier each day or left the house earlier to avoid rush hour traffic?
While we can’t always reduce the amount of stress in our lives, another method of helping stress and insomnia is to change the way you react to stress. Just because you have stressors in your life does not mean you have to let them take control over who and what you are. You can learn to manage your stress so that while it is still there, it will not take control of your life. You can make choices about the stressors in your life and how you choose to handle them.
Remember that even short periods of sleeplessness can have a dire impact on your health and wellbeing so if you feel like stress and insomnia are having an impact on your life or if you suffer from stress-related insomnia for more than a week or two, it’s time to see your doctor and seek treatment for your condition before it worsens or you begin to have other complications.
