Signs of Sleep Deprivation

Not getting enough sleep can have serious consequences on a person’s health and wellbeing. Sleep deprivation is when your body doesn’t get the proper amount of sleep it needs. Sleep deprivation can have some serious affects on the body. Many people do not know that extreme sleep deprivation can even lead to death. Sleep deprivation is not always voluntary. While some people avoid getting enough sleep because they live such busy lives, others have a true sleep disorder that affects their ability to sleep at night.

You can tell if you are not getting enough sleep for proper health once you know how to look out for the signs of sleep deprivation. While some of the signs are pretty obvious, many are not. Some people could be lacking sleep, showing the signs of sleep deprivation and not even realize it. Other times people think their symptoms must be attributed to another condition or situation and they do not realize it is from their lack of sleep.

Here are some signs of sleep deprivation:

 Poor concentration
 Poor creativity
 You’re tired and sluggish
 You’re very emotional
 You are moody and irritable
 You snap at others because you are tired
 You may feel depressed
 You lack the urge to do things you once loved
 You don’t enjoy being around friends
 Your reaction time is slower
 You have aches and pains for no reason
 You slur your speech
 You have unexplained weight gain
 You fall asleep during the day
 You oversleep the alarm or hit snooze a lot

Most people need at least eight hours of sleep each night but most adults get six or less. Sometimes the lack of sleep is due to a sleep disorder or situations out of our control but often it is because we are so busy we don’t make enough time for sleep. We try to stay up late and squeeze as many things into our day as we can and then get up early and start all over again but doing this day after day can take a huge toll on our bodies.

While many of us live demanding lives, such as juggling work and school or work and a family, it’s important to still make time for sleep. If you do not take this as a serious priority, all areas of your life and health can suffer.
