Sleep and Stress

Sleep and stress have very direct impacts on one another. Stress can lead to lack of sleep and a lack of sleep causes more stress so it is a vicious cycle that is difficult to break. To begin to understand it, you must understand the relationship between sleep and stress. Then you can begin to take control of your situation and learn to better your life, reduce stress and increase the quality of sleep you get each night.

Many people throughout their days will sacrifice sleep to try to get more done in a day. While it’s not a big deal to miss some sleep every now and then, it is a problem when it becomes a habit. There are many serious problems that can come from lack of sleep and one of the most common reasons to miss sleep is stress.

Stress can wreak havoc on our lives and a stressed person will have difficulty relaxing enough to sleep properly or calming their thoughts enough to fall asleep in the first place. When you don’t get enough sleep in the first place, you are jeopardizing the natural flow and function of your body’s systems which only makes stress worse. Increased stress that goes untreated means more restless nights and lost sleep.

Often people try to self-medicate their stress and lack of sleep with medications, alcohol or other methods. This typically only makes the sleepless situation worse and increases your stress. The only way to truly deal with this problem is to learn proper ways of managing and reducing your stress and increasing your ability to sleep well at night.

While it is never possible to completely eliminate all the stress from our lives, we can learn better ways of dealing with the stress that we have. For example, you can learn to manage small stressors before bedtime so that you do not have to go to bed with worries on your mind. Another way to reduce your stress is to get more organized. When your daily life is more organized, you will be less pressured and frustrated and this will help your stress factor.

Heart disease, stomach aches, tension headaches, memory lapses and even insomnia are some of the few health conditions that are a direct consequence of stress. When you learn to take control of your stress and manage it in a healthy way, you lower your risk for these other health complications and you increase your quality of sleep.
